Akron Digest
July 3, 2026
Good Morning, Akron!
Today is both National Air Conditioning Appreciation Day and National Stay Out of the Sun Day, which feels appropriate given the current heatwave.
So if you’re able, find the coolest room in your house, aim a little gratitude at the nearest AC unit, and stay put. If anyone asks what you’re doing, tell them you're observing a national holiday. Two of them, actually.
In this week’s issue: It’s all about the Fourth. We’ll tell you where to find the fireworks, the food, and the drinks.
Let's dive into this week's issue.
📰 The Digest
Your Grocery Store Just Got a New Owner 🛒
The grocery chain that's been ringing up our eggs and Fuelperks for decades will soon be changing hands. Kroger, the Cincinnati grocery company, announced Wednesday that it's buying Pittsburgh-based Giant Eagle for $1.65 billion, adding roughly 200 supermarkets and 11 pharmacies to a business that already runs more than 20 grocery brands across the country.
For now, your local Giant Eagle stays exactly as it is. Giant Eagle keeps its name, and both companies say there are no plans to close stores or cut frontline jobs. The deal isn't expected to close until 2027, and it still has to clear federal antitrust review before anything is final.
Kroger itself is barely a presence in our corner of Ohio, with the nearest store a long drive away. So this isn't really a competition story. It's a familiar local chain getting absorbed into a national one. Your Fuelperks, for now, are safe.
The news about Giant Eagle got me thinking about one of my favorite parts of Giant Eagle 30 years ago:

🔥 Top Events This Weekend
Here is our list of hand-picked events around the area:
All-American Burger & BBQ Festival 🍔
Thursday–Saturday, July 2–4 | 11:00 AM – 11:00 PM daily | Lock 3
Three days, three smokers running nonstop. Lock 3's All-American Burger & BBQ Festival stacks ribs, burgers, brisket, and every fixin' in between from local pitmasters like After Hours BBQ, PigFoot, and Stray Dog, all for free admission.
There's live music every night on the Maynard stage, with Friday's lineup featuring regional acts into the evening. Add a Buckeye State Credit Union Kids' Zone, a DORA for grabbing a cold one, and the big finale: the city's official fireworks over Lock 3 at 9:45 PM on the Fourth.
Salute to America 🎇
Saturday, July 4 | 8:00 PM | Blossom Music Center
A Blossom Fourth of July tradition returns July 4, with the Blossom Festival Band filling the summer night with marches, Broadway favorites, and an Armed Forces Salute, capped, naturally, by fireworks over the pavilion.
Spread a blanket on the lawn, pack a picnic (Blossom is one of the rare venues that lets you bring your own food and even a bottle of wine), and settle in for the evening. Lawn tickets start around $41.
America 250 Celebration & Fireworks 🎆
Friday, July 3 | 6:00 PM – 10:00 PM | Downtown Cuyahoga Falls
Falls Downtown Fridays goes full star-spangled on July 3, throwing a birthday bash for a 250-year-old. The Buck Naked Band takes the Front Street stage at 7 PM, with a professional fireworks finale at 10.
Between sets, graze the food trucks and grab a pour from HiHO Brewing and Missing Mountain. Beer sales benefit a local nonprofit, so you can toast to America and your community in the same sip. It's free and family-friendly.
Kent Heritage Festival 🦆
Friday, July 3 | 11:00 AM – 10:00 PM | Downtown Kent
Downtown Kent turns into one giant block party on July 3, with live music across multiple stages, a classic car show topping 100 rides, food trucks galore, and the Kent Jaycees "Ducks Down the River" race sending a flotilla of rubber ducks bobbing down the Cuyahoga.
Wander between the Haymaker Farmers' Market, local breweries, and artisan vendor booths, turn the kids loose in the activity zone, and stick around as the whole thing wraps with fireworks after dark. Admission is free. Bring the whole crew.
Hudson Independence Day Celebration 🎸
Friday, July 3 | 6:00 PM | Barlow Farm Park
Hudson kicks off the holiday weekend at Barlow Farm Park, where the gates open at 6 PM and Journey tribute band E5C4P3 hits the stage at 7:30 to belt out every "Don't Stop Believin'" singalong you've been saving up.
Grab dinner from the local food vendors, claim your patch of grass, and wait for the choreographed fireworks at dusk. It's free. Just leave the coolers and consumer fireworks at home, and use the free shuttle from the old JOANN lot on Darrow Road.
