Starting soon, I'm doing something I've wanted to do for a while. I'm eating my way through Akron's best burgers and writing about what I find.
We're starting with Swensons. I have some history there. Several years working the curb, a lot of opinions about what the place is now versus what it used to be. Not all of them are comfortable.

Summit County Homeowners Grapple with 18% Valuation Jump 🏠
Summit County mailed new property reappraisals last week, and homeowners are wrestling with the numbers. Average home valuations jumped 18% countywide, reflecting 2025 sales data and recent improvements. The reappraisals, mandated every six years by state law, are catching some residents off guard.
The county's fiscal office reassures homeowners that property taxes don't automatically increase proportionally to value changes, thanks to House Bill 920 passed in 1976. But the gap between promise and perception is causing real anxiety. For seniors and fixed-income residents, the fear is real: being priced out of longtime neighborhoods.
Homeowners can contest valuations through in-person meetings (running through late August), phone, email, or virtual appointments. It's a lifeline for those worried their assessments don't match reality.
What can you actually do about it?
Worried seniors and disabled homeowners should look at the Homestead Exemption, which trims the tax bill by an average of $535 a year for those 65+ or permanently disabled under an income cap (roughly $41,000 for 2026). Every owner-occupant, regardless of age, can claim the smaller Owner-Occupancy Credit too. Think your number is wrong? The informal review deadline is August 27, and comparable neighborhood sales or a recent appraisal are your best ammunition. New values won't hit tax bills until January 2027, so there's time to make your case. Questions: 330-643-2710 for valuations, 330-643-2661 for exemptions.

South Point Tavern Pours Into Northwest Akron 🥃
Four years after Pavona's Pizza Joint burned down in a 2022 arson fire set by its own co-owner, the Sand Run Road spot is getting a much cheerier second act. South Point Tavern, a whiskey-and-cocktail bar with a sister location in Green, is moving in at 32 Sand Run Road. Expect whiskey, wine, and beer, and a bring-your-own-food policy.
IKEA Is Finally Coming to Northeast Ohio 🛋️
Start assembling your excitement (and locate your Allen wrench). IKEA is opening a small-format store at Crocker Park in Westlake in spring 2027, taking over the old Dick's Sporting Goods space. It's not the full blue-box warehouse, but the 80,000-square-foot showroom promises design help, a marketplace, and yes, the Swedish meatballs. Still a hike from Akron, though Crocker Park is expecting to draw in residents all over Northeast Ohio with the customer-favorite home store.

Off the Vine 🍷
Friday, July 31 | 5:30 PM – 8:30 PM | Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens
Wine and food tasting on the grounds of Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens, with live music and a summer evening surrounded by historic gardens. The event runs Friday evening from 5:30 to 8:30, giving you a few hours to sample wines, grab a bite, and take in the grounds before sunset.
This is a 21-and-older event. Tickets are limited, so grab yours soon if you want an evening at the Estate. Stan Hywet's grounds are worth the visit on their own, and adding wine makes it better.
Nepali Fest 2026 🥳
Saturday, August 1 | 5:00 PM – 11:00 PM | 2085 Front St, Cuyahoga Falls
Nepali Fest brings Nepalese culture, music, and food to Cuyahoga Falls on Saturday evening. Live music and cultural performances run from 5 PM to 11 PM, with authentic Nepali food vendors serving dinner throughout the night. The festival celebrates Nepali traditions and brings the community together for an evening of music, dancing, and food.
Free admission. No tickets or registration required. Just show up, grab a plate, and settle in for the performances.
Summit County Fair 🎡
July 28 – August 2 | 1050 North Ave, Tallmadge
The Summit County Fair runs all week through Sunday. Grandstand shows, livestock events, farmer races, antique tractors, horse pulls, carnival rides, food vendors, craft exhibits, and family activities fill the grounds in Tallmadge. It's the kind of fair that tries to be everything to everyone, and mostly succeeds.
Whether you're there for the midway or the agriculture exhibits, it's summer fair season. Gates open daily, and admission gets you access to most of the events and exhibits throughout the fairgrounds.
EarthQuaker Day 2026 🎸
Saturday, August 1 | 11:00 AM – 5:00 PM | EarthQuaker Devices, 350 W. Bowery St, Akron
Akron's homegrown guitar pedal company throws open its factory doors for a free, family-friendly block party marking its 10th anniversary. Take a guided workshop tour, catch live sets from Kaycie Satterfield and Northeast Ohio's own Anya Van Rose, graze the food trucks, and enter the gear raffle. What began in 2016 as a scrappy parking-lot open house now draws fans from around the world.
Music lovers get an afternoon of live tunes and food-truck bites; gearheads get the good stuff, from exclusive pedals in one-of-a-kind colors to hands-on clinics and a marketplace of builders running Keeley to PRS. Bring a hygiene item for local nonprofit Friends in Tents and you'll earn a spin on the discount wheel.
Pirate Day on the Lake ⚓
Saturday, August 1 | 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM | Portage Lakes State Park, 5031 Manchester Road, New Franklin
Pirate Day at Portage Lakes offers pirate-themed fun for families on Saturday. Free craft stations, treasure hunts, boat rides to Treasure Island, the Mermaid, pirate performers, fire spinning, and the Little Roaming Railroad. Food and vendors throughout the park.
Photo ops with costumed characters throughout. Bring the kids and lean into the theme. The event runs from 11 AM to 3 PM, giving you a solid afternoon of pirate activities before the crowds thin out.
