Good Morning, Akron!

Shower thought for the day:

We don’t check the refrigerator multiple times hoping to find new food. We check it to see how far our standards have dropped since the last visit.

Let’s dive into this week’s issue.

🗞️ The Digest

Want to Ride the Goodyear Blimp? Here's Your Shot.

Goodyear doesn’t sell tickets to ride the blimp. Ever. So unless you're a pro athlete, a Goodyear exec, or extremely well-connected, you’re not getting on board.

Until now.

Bounce Innovation Hub is auctioning off two golden tickets for a ride aboard the iconic airship during its PNC Startup Showcase on September 25. It’s part of the blimp’s 100th birthday celebration, paired with Akron’s bicentennial, making for one very Akron evening.

Get ready to break open the piggy bank. Bidding starts at $1,500. You don’t have to attend the event to win, but with food, drinks, and a look inside Akron’s growing startup scene, it's a solid excuse to stop by.

Most of us will experience this from the ground. But if you're up for a once-in-a-lifetime experience—and want to support local entrepreneurs while you're at it—this could be your chance.

Tickets to the event, including the auction, can be found here.

🍔 Akron Bites

A new dessert adventure called the Summit Sweet Stroll has launched in and around Akron, featuring 20 local spots serving up everything from ice cream and candy to gourmet popcorn. Grab a passport, collect 16 stamps, and you’ll earn a free scoop—plus a chance to win a $250 prize pack.

Meanwhile, Pav’s Creamery is doing something no one asked for but everyone’s curious about: turning the legendary Lawson’s chip dip into ice cream. It dropped on August 6, comes with a side of kettle chips, and only 100 pints will be available per location. Salty-sweet chaos incoming.

And in downtown news, Akronym Brewing is making a comeback. The brewery, which closed in 2024, is set to reopen this month under the leadership of The Brew Kettle’s president, Bryan Weber. Expect new beers from top Ohio breweries, a full bar, and a revamped food menu.

🔥 Top 5 Events This Week

Here is our list of hand-picked events around the area:

Akron Pickle Fest 🥒

Sunday, August 10, 10 AM - 5 PM – Lock 3 Park

Pickle beer. Pickle ice cream. Pickle everything. This briny bash is part food fest, part oddball celebration, and 100% locally loved. Expect vendors, live music, games, and more green than a St. Paddy’s Day parade.

If you’ve ever uttered the words “I could eat a whole jar,” this is your Super Bowl.

Hale Farm Civil War Weekend ⚔️

Saturday, August 9 – 10 AM - 5 PM – Hale Farm and Village

Step back into the 1860s with booming cannons, battle reenactments, and Union and Confederate camps spread across the scenic grounds of Hale Farm. Soldiers march, horses charge, and kids get hands-on with history.

It’s one of the region’s most immersive living history events—and yes, it’s loud. Bring earplugs and curiosity.

GeekFest 🤓

Saturday, August 9 – 10:00 AM - 4:00 PM – Akron Library Main

Whether you're into cosplay, comics, video games, anime, or just geeking out over cool stuff, this is your scene. Expect trivia, panels, vendors, and enough costumes to make your local Spirit Halloween jealous.

It's free, it’s downtown, and it’s family-friendly—unless you’re still emotionally scarred from that one time you lost at Mario Kart.

Rock the Civic Gala, Celebrating Meat Loaf

Saturday, August 9 – 5:30 PM – Akron Civic Theatre

It’s part celebration, part rock concert, and all Meat Loaf—courtesy of tribute band Neverland Express, along with American Idol winner Caleb Johnson. Expect live music, raffles, and Civic charm in full force.

Upgrade to VIP and you’ll get dinner, drinks, desserts, and a private Sky Box to watch the show from. Like a rock star, but with better snacks.

The Music of Billy Joel 🎹

Sunday, August 10 – 7:00 PM – Blossom Music Center

The Cleveland Orchestra teams up with vocalist Tony DeSare to bring Billy Joel’s biggest hits to life. Picture "Piano Man" under the stars, backed by world-class musicians and thousands of fans singing along.

Pro tip: While you can’t bring food or alcohol into Live Nation concerts, Cleveland Orchestra events do allow food, beverages, and even wine. Pack a spread, grab your favorite bottle of red or white, and don’t forget your best off-key falsetto.
