🗞️ The Great Tomato Taste-off
Akron Digest
August 22, 2025
Good Morning, Akron!
This week in "Awards you don't want to win": Akron's Municipal Courthouse took 6th place for Ugliest Public Building in the country. I never really noticed it before, but now I get it. From some angles, it looks like a parking garage that got a promotion. From others, it's Akron's tallest filing cabinet. Turn your head sideways and you get concrete lasagna.
We joke because we love. If you work there, thanks for keeping the city running—you're the only reason the place has any warmth at all.

On to prettier things. Let’s dive into this week’s issue.
🗞️ The Digest
When Your City Hall Doesn't Live in Your City
The city of Green has a problem that sounds like a postal punchline: their own city hall's mailing address says it's in Uniontown. The airport? North Canton. Popular restaurants like Twisted Olive? Also North Canton, apparently, even though you could literally walk there from downtown Green.
After decades of this addressing chaos, Mayor Rocco Yeargin has had enough. Green is now part of a congressional push to force the U.S. Postal Service to give communities like theirs their own zip codes, because sometimes you have to go all the way to Washington to fix something as basic as "where do I live?"
The fallout isn't just annoying—it's expensive. Green lost $614,000 in unpaid taxes in 2023 alone because businesses didn't realize they were actually located in Green. Emergency responders get confused about where to go, and one physical therapist worked in Green for two years without knowing they weren't in Uniontown.
The Postal Service thinks this is all unnecessary drama, but when your fastest-growing city in Summit County can't even get mail delivered to the right municipal identity, maybe a little chaos is worth it.
Mansion Dreams, Fixer-Upper Reality
The historic 1912 Highland Square Mansion that we highlighted last week sold for $185,000 at auction last Friday—a steep drop from its one time $687,000 asking price. The six-minute auction drew about 30 people for the 5,128-square-foot home that's missing parts of its second floor. It now needs extensive repairs before anyone can legally move in. Hopefully the undisclosed winner of the auction can breathe some new life into the old home.
🔥 Top 5 Events This Week
Here is our list of hand-picked events around the area:
The Black Keys at Blossom 🎸
Friday, August 22 | 7:30 PM | Blossom Music Center, Cuyahoga Falls
Akron's own garage rock royalty are coming home for their "No Rain, No Flowers" tour, bringing special guest Gary Clark Jr. to the region's premier outdoor venue. Tickets range from $55 to $300.
It's been over a year since Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney had to cancel last year’s tour to management drama, but they're back with new material and that signature raw energy that made them superstars. Plus, where else can you see Grammy winners under the stars while tailgating in true Northeast Ohio fashion?
Louis C.K.: No-Phone Comedy Zone 📱
Friday, August 22 | 7:30 PM | Akron Civic Theatre
The six-time Emmy and three-time Grammy winner brings his "Ridiculous" tour to downtown's crown jewel venue. Fair warning: this will be a phone-free experience, and anyone seen using a cellphone during the performance will be escorted out.
It's 18+ only and comes with all the legal disclaimers about not recording anything, but that's part of the appeal—live comedy the way it used to be, without the glow of screens. The Civic's intimate setting makes this the perfect venue for his razor-sharp observational style.
Akron Pride: United As One 🏳️🌈
Friday-Sunday, August 22-24 | Downtown Akron
The 2025 Akron Pride Festival, whose theme this year is "United As One," kicks off Friday with a 5K and explodes i1kend celebration. Friday's Pride 5K starts at 6:30 PM from Canal Place, while Saturday brings the main event with the Equity March at 10 a.m. followed by festivities running until 10 p.m. downtown.
This isn't just a party—it's Akron showing what inclusive community looks like, with two stages of entertainment, vendors, food trucks, and that unmistakable energy that comes when people gather to celebrate authenticity. The timing in August means it doesn't compete with other regional Pride events, making it uniquely Akron's own.
Annual Tomato Tasting Festival 🍅
Saturday, August 23 | 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM | Howe Meadow, Peninsula
Over 35 varieties of tomatoes await your taste buds at the Cuyahoga Valley Farmers Market's free annual festival, where you can sample everything from heirlooms to cherry varieties alongside five award-winning local chefs. Think of it as wine tasting, but for people who know the difference between a Cherokee Purple and a Brandywine.
Celebrity judges include Chef Vinnie Cimino of Cordelia, Doug Katz of Zhug, and Jeremy Umansky of Larder Delicatessen. Plus, bloody mary popsicles (non-alcoholic), green tomato jelly, and live music make this way more fun than your average farmers market.
RubberDucks Triple-Header Weekend ⚾
Friday-Sunday, August 22-24 | Canal Park
The forecast says great baseball weather for a stellar weekend at Canal Park. Catch Fireworks after the games on Friday and Saturday night. Special promotions going on each night.
