🗞️Akron Supermoon and Super Events

Akron Digest

Good Morning!

Today’s cosmic treat? The full Beaver Supermoon is lighting up Akron’s night sky, marking the last supermoon of the year. Named by early Native American tribes to signal the time to set beaver traps before winter, this moon isn’t just a pretty sight—it’s a little history lesson. And thanks to its close proximity to Earth, it’s looking extra big and bright. So if you didn’t catch it last night, bundle up, grab a warm drink, and soak in the lunar glow tonight—because we won’t see another supermoon until September 2025! 🌕

Akron ranked 9th hottest housing market 🏠️ đź”Ą

The Akron metro area landed in the top 10 of Realtor.com’s October "hottest housing markets" rankings, coming in at No. 9. Akron joins a strong Midwest and Northeast showing, with 13 of the top 20 spots claimed by markets in those regions. While national home prices remained steady, demand surged in these “hot” metros, where listings saw 2.6 times the usual views and inventory stayed tight, driving up prices by 2.9% on average.

Text to 911 now available in summit county

Summit County residents now have the option to text 911 for emergencies, ideal for those in dangerous situations or with hearing impairments. While calling is still recommended, texting offers a discreet alternative. Simply send details to "911," and dispatchers will respond with questions. The system even auto-translates non-English texts for accessibility. Just remember: keep messages brief, avoid slang or emojis, and use standard texting services only.

New Fire Station in Wallhaven đźš’

Akron’s brand-new Fire Station 12 officially opened its doors on South Hawkins Avenue, replacing the original station from 1952. This 16,800 sq. ft., $9.5M facility boasts state-of-the-art amenities designed to enhance firefighter safety and service to the community. Highlights include three full apparatus bays, a fitness room, detox sauna pods, and individual living quarters.

To celebrate, Akron Fire Department is hosting open houses on Nov. 16 and 17, from 12–4 p.m. Tour the station, enjoy refreshments, and learn about the new facility that honors Akron’s firefighting legacy while embracing modern health and safety standards.

University of Akron faces job cuts

The University of Akron is bracing for workforce cuts as it tackles rising costs, enrollment declines, and reduced state funding. Operating losses jumped from $90.8 million in 2021 to $149.2 million in 2023, while enrollment has dropped by nearly 25% since 2019. President R.J. Nemer recently reduced his office’s budget by $800,000 and asked Provost John Wiencek to evaluate each academic department’s viability.

Nemer, who started in May, has emphasized transparency with faculty amid financial strain. He plans to present budget recommendations to the board early next year, framing cuts as essential for a leaner, more sustainable future for Akron.
