🗞️ Green Parkas Required

Good Morning, Akron!

One of Akron’s most charming quirks? We like to do things our own way—like throwing a St. Paddy’s Day parade a full nine days early. Why? Who knows! Maybe we just wanted to make sure the Guinness settles before the real day arrives and we can do it again. Oh, and in true Northeast Ohio fashion, expect a high of 35 degrees, so swap out your shamrock t-shirt for a green parka—because nothing says 'Irish pride' like shivering in March.

In this week’s issue:

  • Akronite brings home an Oscar

  • Joann’s Final Sale

  • Book Fest!

…And much more.

The Digest

Akron to Oscars 🏆

From Buchtel High to Hollywood’s biggest stage—Akron native Paul Tazewell has officially joined the ranks of Oscar winners. The acclaimed costume designer, known for his work on Hamilton and West Side Story, took home the Academy Award for Best Costume Design for his dazzling work on Wicked. Tazewell’s signature blend of historical authenticity and bold creativity continues to redefine storytelling through fashion. His win isn’t just a personal triumph—it’s an inspiration for every aspiring artist in Akron with dreams of making it big.

Sew Long, Joann 🧵

Joann Fabrics, a longtime haven for crafters, is shutting down all 800 stores by the end of May, leaving customers scrambling to stock up before it's too late. Small business owners, who relies on Joann for her handmade creations, worry about rising costs and delays as they seek alternative suppliers.

Beyond business, the closure is an emotional loss. For decades, Joann was the go-to spot for DIY projects, handmade gifts, and community initiatives like comfort blankets for grieving families. While stores like Michaels and Hobby Lobby remain, many say Joann’s variety and affordability were unmatched.

With brick-and-mortar retail struggling, the shift to online shopping continues—but for many crafters, no website can replace the experience of feeling fabric in person. Joann’s closure marks the end of an era, leaving a hole in the creative community.

Blooming Business 🌱

Spring is in the air, and so is the smell of fresh soil—Petitti Garden Centers is preparing to open its 10th location in Montrose/Bath. The Ohio-based family business, known for its lush nurseries and expert gardening advice, is expanding its green empire. With an ever-growing interest in home gardening, the new store is set to meet demand just in time for planting season. Expect a grand opening packed with plant sales, workshops, and expert tips. Gardening fans, it’s time to get your hands dirty! 🌿
